While it seems that a large number of people that I meet have some pretty impressive goals, I am surprised by the fact that so few make use of a mentor. Fewer yet take the opportunity to have multiple mentors. Yes, you did read that correctly…multiple mentors.
Why Not?
Mentoring is not a new concept and the benefits are very well documented. Mentoring can be traced back to Greek mythology when Odysseus placed a mentor in charge of his son during his travels. More recently (if you consider 1699 recent) a French writer published a very popular book where the main character of the story was a Mentor. Personally, I would expect that with a history dating back to Greek mythology when combined with success by major corporations as direct result of mentoring programs, that more people would have mentors.
In short mentoring is about a more experienced person helping another to achieve a goal. The overall mentoring process is about giving help and support in a non-threatening way, and a manner that will empower the recipient to move forward with confidence towards their goals.
While there are often many channels available to an individual looking for help to achieve a set of goals more often many of these are associated within formal structures such as:
*Schools
*Corporations
*Formal Training associated with specific programs
The challenge here is that more often than not none of the above listed channels typically apply to people building a Network Marketing business. Very few people will be signing up this coming Fall to attend classes to better understand how to build their business. Then again there are MLM companies that do provide some very helpful training to their distributors, but more often then not this training and information is not sturctured in the true fashion of a mentor mentee relationship.
Then there is the challenge that many people would find it difficult and a little embarrassing to discuss their challenges, goals and failures when it comes to building their MLM business. At this point we have not even looked at the fact that a good mentor will be holding you accountable for the actions and results required for you to achieve your goals. Having someone hold you accountable is great when everything is going your way, life is not getting in the way and you are riding the wave of success. However, we all know that as with everything in life there will be times when things just don’t seem to fall into place.
I am also convinced that one of the biggest things holding people back from obtaining a mentor is the simple fact that their upline has never had a mentor and as a result are not recommending to their organization to seek out a mentor to aide in their personal development and success.
In case you have never taken the time to look into the history of the most successful people that you know, I would highly recommend doing so. Chances are anyone achieving great levels of success at some point in their journey has benefited from the council of a mentor who had attained great success. For all of you Star Wars fans, think about the relationship between Obi-wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.
If you truly want to achieve the kind of success that you are capable of achieving and you would like to ease the learning curve, then having a mentor is the right choice.
In case you have forgotten, I mentioned having multple mentors. As we discussed the point of a mentor is to help you ease the learning curve that comes along with building a six figure income or whatever your desired level of success may be. While we all know people that have attained this level of success in their lives each of them will have their own set of strengths. Some will be great Leaders, others can Promote like no one else, and then there are those that are natural born…..(you fill in the blank).
If you know that you have a need to improve in a certain area take the time to seek out a mentor that can help you improve in that area. If I wanted to become one of the best playes to ever play the game of basketball I certainly would not be talking with Peyton Manning. While Peyton is a phenominal quarterback and talented leader in his own right, I would be far better off talking with Michael Jordon when it comes to basketball.
Depending on a number of factors you may not want to be working with two mentors at the same time, but you may want to seek out different mentors along the way to achieving financial independence.
Seek out a mentor who you know, like and trust. Set a time when you can take the time to talk uninterrupted, explain your goals, that you value their advice and knowing that they have traveled the path you are on, hope that they would consider mentoring you through the process. Whatever the circumstances, mentoring is a one-to-one relationship, is completely confidential and can be a useful tool for helping you reach your goals faster than you could ever achieve by yourself.
